Scientific technologies - level 3 apprenticeship framework

This framework sets out the standards and criteria you must meet to complete the apprenticeship programme and receive your apprenticeship certificate for level 3 scientific technologies. This is the only level 3 training in this skill acceptable for apprenticeshipsni funding.

    About the framework

The framework specifies the standards and the criteria for the delivery of a level 3 apprenticeship framework to achieve qualified status within the scientific technologies industry.

Successful completion of the framework will lead to the award of a level 3 qualification showing recognition as a qualified person within the industry.

    Mandatory outcomes

Achievement of a level 3 apprenticeship in scientific technologies will be assessed by verification through the appropriate awarding body. Participants must complete both a competence-based and a knowledge-based qualification, along with the mandatory essential skills qualifications.

    Mandatory essential skills

The following essential skills are mandatory and are to be completed as part of the apprenticeship:

    • application of number – level 2
    • communication – level 2
    • information and communication technology – level 2

However, any qualifications you already have are assessed against the framework requirements and may result in an exemption from the above.

    Competency and knowledge qualifications

You must complete both the competency-based and the knowledge-based qualifications listed below.

    Competence-based qualification:

    • Pearson Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activates Pearson Education (600/1731/4)

    Knowledge-based qualification:

    • Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science 601/7435/3

    Eligibility and entry requirements

The scientific technologies level 3 apprenticeship is suitable for applicants who have five GCSEs grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications) including maths, english and a science.

This is not a hard and fast rule but may vary according to the pathway chosen and the suitability of individual applicants.

    Duration

Apprenticeship duration can vary and will be agreed between the apprentice, training contractor and employer.

    Assessment

    Competence qualification

Competence must be demonstrated in a real work environment. Supporting methods of assessment could be:

    • signed witness statement made by supervisor
    • observation made by qualified assessor
    • written or oral professional discussion with a qualified assessor

You must show knowledge and understanding  by  answering a set of questions that must relate to the assessment being undertaken.

The assessor must ask all questions at appropriate moments throughout the assessment process, preferably linked to observed activity and/ or a review of documentary evidence. It will be up to the assessor to determine what questions are asked. All questions and answers must be recorded.

    Knowledge qualification (technical qualification)

All methods of assessment will be outlined in the awarding organisations centre manual. This document will be available to all approved centres.

Supporting methods of assessment could be:

    • work-based projects
    • reflective discussions
    • formal unit exams
    • observation of practical work

    Related knowledge

You must be provided with mandatory induction. Employee rights and responsibilities (ERR) must be covered and confirmation of completing ERR must be included with the request for the apprenticeship certificate.

    Responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the training contractor /college to make sure that the requirements of this framework are delivered in line with DfE apprenticeship guidelines and operational requirements.
