Organising events and activities in forests

To arrange a special event or activity on land managed by Forest Service in Northern Ireland, you may need to get a licence. Check with Forest Service during the early stages of your planning to see if you need a licence.

Phone the 'Forest Service Recreation Team' and tell them about the event or activity that you have in mind. They can then let you know if you need to get a licence:

Events and activities examples

Examples of events and activities that need a licence:

  • activities where vehicles need to be taken into the forest
  • events that are competitive
  • events that will need extra car parking 
  • events that will need part of the forest closed off to protect public safety
  • event locations or activities which may damage the forest
  • events or activities where people will be charged to take part
  • filming activities including the use of drones
  • events involving the sale of food or other items
  • training and bush-craft courses and events
  • events or activities where structures or tents need to be put up

Safety in forests

There may be restrictions on access to parts of the forests from time to time due to forest operations. Pay attention to safety signs.
