Rivers and watercourses

DfI Rivers maintain and inspect watercourses in Northern Ireland to make sure these are free flowing. This helps prevent flooding and improves land drainage.

Consent to discharge into watercourse

If you expect to discharge into a watercourse, or do works that will affect the free flow of a watercourse, you need to apply for consent from DfI Rivers.

Eastern region

The Greater Belfast office is responsible for district council areas Belfast,  Lisburn and Castlereagh, North Down and Ards, Mid and East Antrim, and Antrim and Newtownabbey.

The Lisburn office is responsible for district council areas Lisburn and Castlereagh, Causeway Coast and Glens, Mid and East Antrim, Antrim and Newtownabbey, Lisburn and Castlereagh, North Down and Ards,  and Newry, Mourne and Down.

The Armagh office is responsible for district council areas Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon, Mid Ulster, and Newry, Mourne and Down

Western region

The Omagh office is responsible for district council areas Mid Ulster, Fermanagh and Omagh, and Derry and Strabane.
