    Helping your child at school

    A child's family and home life has a big impact on their educational achievement. Read some tips on how you can help your child have a better experience at school.

    Children's sleep times

    A child aged between four and 11 needs 10 hours sleep every night. Children aged between 12 and 16 need at least eight or nine hours sleep every night.

    School attendance

    It is important that your child goes to school regularly so they'll get the most from their education. Taking an interest in their education and talking about any problems they are having at school can help solve any concerns you have in getting your child to go to school.

    Healthy eating

    When your child first starts school, their energy and nutrient needs are high. They need to eat the right foods. Children need a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods. Encourage your child to eat various foods to get the nutrients they need to stay healthy.

    When your child awakes in the morning, it might be 12 hours or more since they ate.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If a child skips breakfast, they might miss out on important vitamins and minerals. 

    Eating a healthy breakfast can boost your child's attention span, concentration and memory - which they need to learn in school.

    • do better in school
    • eat healthier throughout the day

    Give your child healthy snacks for break times

    Help your child get their five a day by including some fruit or vegetables as a snack for their morning break at school. Water and milk are the most suitable drinks for children.
