Winter Fuel Payment

Winter Fuel Payment is a benefit paid to older people to help them keep warm in winter. Find out who can get it, how to get it and how much you can get. If you haven’t received it before, find out what you need to do.

Winter Fuel Payment 2013/2014

The Winter Fuel Payment scheme for 2013/2014 is closed.  You can no longer claim Winter Fuel Payment for 2013/2014.

Applications for the 2014/2015 scheme will open in August 2014.

Who can get it and how much you can get

The Winter Fuel Payment is a tax free payment to help older people keep warm during winter. It is provided by the government to those who are eligible.

Who can get it in winter 2013/2014

If you were born on or before 5 January 1952 you may qualify. It’s not means tested and you can get it if you’re working or claiming a benefit. In some circumstances you may be able to get it if you live in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

How much you can get

You have received a Winter Fuel Payment before

If you previously received a Winter Fuel Payment and there has been no change in your circumstances, you don’t need to reapply.

If your circumstances have changed

Winter Fuel Payments abroad

If you live in or move to another EEA country or Switzerland you may be able to get the Winter Fuel Payment. See following link for more information.

You have not received a Winter Fuel Payment before

If you have not received a Winter Fuel Payment before, you need to find out if you qualify.

If your partner is currently receiving a Winter Fuel Payment, but you aren’t, you will need to claim.

Cold Weather Payment
