Registering for a Housing Executive or housing association property

Social rented housing is provided by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) and housing associations (social landlords). All social landlords aim to provide good-quality, affordable housing to people in housing need. Each social landlord is an independent organisation and can offer different services.

Applying for a Housing Executive or housing association property

The application process is how the Housing Executive makes sure that you are eligible for social rented housing. The Housing Executive will try to make the process as straightforward as possible.and will acknowledge your application and arrange for a visit to be carried out to assess your circumstances.

Will one application form allow me to apply for all types of social housing?

Yes, one application form will allow you to be considered by all social landlords who have housing in the areas in which you want to live. You can make an application by phoning the Housing Executive on the following number

Can I get help to complete the form?

The Housing/Transfer Application Form includes some notes to help you complete it. If you need more help then please contact your local Housing Executive or housing association office.

Where do I return the form?

You should return the form to the Housing Executive office responsible for the area where you live. Or return it to your nearest housing association office who will then send it to the correct Housing Executive office. You can use the link below to find your local NIHE office:

What happens next?

The Housing Executive will arrange a visit by a housing officer to assess your circumstances and check that you are eligible for social rented housing in Northern Ireland. They will then determine your housing need and place you on the waiting list. Your needs will be assessed under the Housing Selection Scheme.

They will provide advice about the various landlords operating within your area of choice. If you prefer a particular housing association you may also receive a follow-up visit from that organisation.
