Book, change or cancel your theory test appointment
Theory test appointments can be booked online or by telephone. They can also be cancelled or changed with three clear working days' notice.
The driving licence you need
Before you can take the theory test you need to have a valid provisional driving licence. You can apply for a provisional driving licence from Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA). You can get the DL1 application form from main Post Office branches or directly from DVA by calling the number at the link below.
Changes for GB provisional licence holders
From 1 October 2026, holders of a GB provisional licence will not be able to book or take Category A, A1 or A2 (motorcycle) or Category B (car) theory or practical tests in Northern Ireland. This applies to anyone who has not yet obtained a full licence in Category A, A1, A2 or Category B vehicles.
The residency declaration process is no longer available for Category A, A1, A2 or Category B theory or practical tests in Northern Ireland. If you wish to take one of these tests in Northern Ireland, you must hold a Northern Ireland provisional driving licence.
For information on applying for a Northern Ireland provisional licence, visit:
If you currently hold a GB provisional driving licence, you may continue to take a Category A, A1 or A2 or Category B theory or practical test in Northern Ireland until 30 September 2026, provided you meet the eligibility requirements on the date of your test.
As test appointments are subject to availability, we cannot guarantee that a theory or practical test appointment will be available before these changes take effect on 1 October 2026.
