Muckamore Forest including Rea's Wood

This small woodland is located on the north-eastern shoreline of Lough Neagh, between Antrim Marina and the site of the former Deer Park Hotel.

Activities

A single walking trail has been provided here running the full length of the forest. It has a small loop at the south end. This trail also acts as an optional diversionary route for the Lough Shore Cycle Trail, forming part of the SUSTRANS cycling network. Pedestrians have right of way at all times, but should be aware that they may encounter cyclists coming from either direction.

There are no parking facilities at this forest. Walking access is easiest via the Antrim Borough Council car park adjacent to the Marina. A hard surfaced car park, café and toilets are located at the Marina. They are maintained and operated by the Council.

There are no facilities for other recreational activities provided at the forest.

To arrange a special event or activity in this forest, you should apply in the first instance to the Recreation Manager, Forest Service NI based at Garvagh Forest Office.

Such activities may include sporting events or educational visits.

There may be restrictions on access to parts of our forests from time to time to facilitate forest operations. Please adhere to safety signage which will be posted for your safety.

About this forest

Rea’s Wood is contained within the Lough Neagh Special Protection Area. It is an area of alder and willow scrub within the forest. It  has been additionally designated as a Special Area of Conservation in recognition of its high biodiversity value as a primary wet woodland habitat.

The lakeshore trees and shrub layer afford ample opportunities for nesting water birds. During Spring through to early Summer many varieties of birds breed and raise their young here.

How to get there
