By law all births occuring in Northern Ireland must be registered

How to order birth certificates

There are several ways to order a birth or adoption certificate from the General Register Office Northern Ireland (GRONI)

Re-registration of a birth

In certain circumstances a birth that has already been registered may be re-registered

Recording a name change

Anyone born or legally adopted in Northern Ireland to change their forename and/or surname

District Registrars in Northern Ireland

District Registrars are responsible for the registration of all life events in Northern Ireland and are based in council offices

Registering a still-birth

There is no legal requirement to register a still-birth, however, many parents see this as an opportunity to have a formal record of their still-born child
