Registering and naming your baby

By law all births occurring in Northern Ireland must be registered

Order a birth certificate

There are several ways to order a birth or adoption certificate from the General Register Office Northern Ireland (GRONI)

Re-registration of a birth

In certain circumstances a birth that has already been registered may be re-registered

Recording a change of name

Anyone born or legally adopted in Northern Ireland to change their forename and/or surname

Registering a stillbirth

In Northern Ireland, stillbirths must be registered within one year of the stillbirth date

District Registrars in Northern Ireland

District Registrars are responsible for the registration of all life events in Northern Ireland and are based in council offices
