'Money-winning' social media message scam

Have you been contacted by a family member on social media, claiming to have won a significant amount of money? Do they want you to share in their good fortune? Be cautious if you have as it's likely to be a scam.

What has happened

The Police Service of Northern Ireland has received reports of scammers impersonating family members on social media.

The scammers have private messaged the potential victim, to share good news of winning many tens of thousands of pounds and that they wish to send some to them.

All that is required, is for the potential victim to send their sort code and bank number - this is a scam to empty their bank account.

The social media accounts may be hacked or even false.

What you should do

If you receive a private message such as the one described:

  • don't assume that it's genuine - be suspicious, ask questions, and try to catch the person out
  • never send your banking details over social media
  • only share your bank details once you're satisfied that it's genuine and the means of sharing are secure
  • if you suspect the social media account to be false, report it to the platform, then block it

If you've been affected by this, or any other type of fraud, call the PSNI on 101 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
