Dr McBride says smoking is responsible for more deaths each year than drugs, alcohol, road accidents, obesity and suicide combined and that reducing smoking continues to be a top priority for him.

New vaccinations

Dr McBride has highlighted the introduction of two new vaccination programmes to provide protection against the different strains of meningococcal disease, which can cause meningitis (an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning), which are serious and potentially fatal illnesses.

Dr McBride says that In Northern Ireland, almost 1 in 5 of the adult population consumes alcohol at levels above the previous guidelines, that is 3 to 4 units per day for men and 2 to 3 units for women. He states that it is vital that people have access to the most up-to-date advice and information so that they can be empowered and supported to take healthy decisions to improve their own health and wellbeing.
