Opportunities available to be a school governor
Would you like to be a school governor? Serving as a school governor is an excellent way to put something back into your local community and can be a very worthwhile and rewarding experience. Applications for vacant posts are sought from people with a wide range of skills, experience and backgrounds.
School governors are volunteers. Boards of governors are made up of representatives of the owners and former owners of schools; parents and teachers; and people from the wider community who have an interest in education.
People from all walks of life can apply to become a school governor and everyone has something to offer. It is not necessary to be an expert in education. Training will be available to all governors through a Regional Governors’ Training and Support Service.
While the roles and responsibilities of a school governor do require a time commitment, the role can be rewarding and allows you to make a contribution to the community, children and young people.
Anyone over 18 can apply to be a school governor and no formal qualifications are required. If you have some spare time, and the ability to work in a team and a willingness to listen, learn and undertake training, you could become a school governor.
