New internet safety campaign clicks off

It’s Safer Internet Day (9 February), and a new campaign has been launched to try and keep young people safe online. The Click Clever, Click Safe code identifies things to remember that can help keep young people safe when they visit their favourite websites.

Zip it, Block it, Flag it

The code wants young people to do three simple things:

  • zip it - keep personal stuff private and think about what they say and do online
  • block it - block people who send them nasty messages and don’t open unknown links and attachments
  • flag it - flag up with someone they trust if anything upsets them or if someone asks to meet them offline

By following this code, young people should be able to use the internet safely. However, if there are any problems, you should also:

  • contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if a child comes across inappropriate content or is subjected to any inappropriate contact while online
  • install and regularly update filtering software to protect against inappropriate internet access

If you are worried about illegal materials or suspicious online behaviour, contact the Child Exploitation and Online Protection centre (CEOP).
