Young people and custody
If you are found guilty of an offence you could find yourself facing custody.
Juvenile Justice Centre Orders
The Juvenile Justice Centre Order (JJCO) is the main custodial sentence for young people aged between 10 and 17. It is normally for a period of six months but can be for up to two years. Half of your time is served in the Juvenile Justice Centre, with the remaining half served under supervision in the community.
If you are under the age of 18 and are found guilty of the most serious crimes, like murder and serious assaults, the court may decide to detain you for a longer period.
If you are aged between 10 and 17 and found guilty of an offence, you will be sent to a special facility called Woodlands Juvenile Justice Centre (JJC) in Bangor. Woodlands JJC offers you training, supervision and support, both during and after release. You may also spend time in Woodlands JJC if a court decides to remand you in custody until your next court appearance.
What is Woodlands like?
Woodlands JJC provides you with a safe and secure environment. The centre consists of six units or houses. Each unit has a manager and a team of care staff. You will be appointed a case manager and key worker who will be responsible for looking after your individual needs and give support and guidance throughout your time in custody.
There is a strong focus on education in Woodlands and you will spend much of your day attending classes. This will help improve your chances of gaining employment or returning to education after your release. You may also be required to attend some programmes to help you address the causes of your offending behaviour such as victim awareness, anger management or substance abuse awareness.
Time will be made for you to take part in sport or other leisure activities. Your family will be able to visit you during your time in Woodlands and you will also be able to make phone calls and write letters home. You will be expected to respect a number of rules which are in place in the centre.
