MOT test video transcript

When taking your car for an MOT test you should aim to be at the test centre at least 10 minutes before your appointment time, and go to the lane number shown in your appointment letter. The inspector will direct you into the test hall.

Try not to be nervous. Inspectors are trained to guide and direct you from here on. Have your registration book available, and be prepared to release the car bonnet.

Vehicle emissions will be checked at this point too.

Drive slowly to the next stage, the inspector will show you where to stop.

Lights and wipers will be checked now; it’s useful if you’re familiar with all the controls and switches, especially the rear fog light.

Be prepared to exit the vehicle, open the boot, and then remove the fuel cap.

After this you may be asked to move to the passenger seat. Your driving role is finished.

Don’t worry if the car appears to vibrate during the shock absorber test. This is normal and does no harm to the vehicle.

Be prepared for a slight rocking motion as the vehicle is driven from the shock absorber test on to the brake roller. The front and rear brakes will now be tested, including the handbrake.

After the brake test, the inspector will direct you to the waiting area. You should stay here until called back by the inspector.

The suspension and steering check equipment may sound noisy, but it’s designed not to cause damage.

When your car passes the test, the MOT disc must be displayed on the nearside of the front windscreen.
