Children's road safety video transcript

Roads can be dangerous places for young children but there’s a lot parents and guardians can do to ensure their safety.

The walk to school is an ideal opportunity to show children how to keep safe.

At all times make sure they can be easily seen – hi visibility stripes on clothing or better still a fluorescent tabard with reflective stripes is good for this and these are readily available in local shops.

Explain why they should hold your hand and walk on the inside of the pavement well away from the dangerous kerb.

On the way discuss road signs and markings and identify safe places to cross roads.

Talk about hazards such as cars emerging from driveways or car parks.

Always cross roads at a safe place even though it may be further to walk. Lead by example - show children it’s never ok to cross when the red man shows even if you can see the road is clear. Young children copy adults’ good and bad behaviour and cannot judge speed or anticipate danger.

When using a pelican crossing children should stand, wait for the green man and make sure the traffic has stopped before crossing.

Always walk straight across the road, looking and listening all the way.

Children may think the safest way to cross roads is to run across as fast as possible but dashing into traffic can result in children being knocked down. They should never cross near parked vehicles including ice cream vans.

Where no crossing is available, teach children to cross at a safe place for example at a traffic island.

Teach them to Stop, Look, Listen and keep looking and listening as they cross the road - your children are your responsibility.
