Guide to information for carers
If you're a carer, you may also be entitled to help and support. A 'carer' is someone who looks after a friend, relative or neighbour who needs support because of their age, sickness or disability.
Caring and support services
Your local Trust may be able to make things easier for you and the person you care for. It may offer services such as home help (for cleaning, for example) or short-term breaks for you as a carer.
Money matters
If you are a carer, you may be entitled to financial help and support.
Carers and employment
As a carer, you may already combine looking after someone at home while working. You may be looking to get back into employment and continue to care for someone.
Health and taking a break
When you're caring for someone, it can be easy to neglect your own health and well-being.
But it's important to look after yourself and have some time away from caring.
Carers' rights
There are some specific rights that relate to carers including employment rights, the right to an assessment and receiving direct payments.
When someone dies in a hospital, residential care or nursing home
When someone close to you dies in residential care or nursing home or hospital, staff who have been caring for the person will know what to do and will provide you with emotional and practical support.
