Vehicle check services

Before you buy a used vehicle you can check its details to see if it's been stolen, written off or has any finance outstanding against it. You can check by using telephone services from Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) and private vehicle check companies.

Enquiries by telephone

In addition to the general enquiries telephone service, DVA operates a premium rate telephone service which gives limited vehicle information. Calls are charged at £1.50 per minute and lines operate Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm

An enquiry from this service will confirm the chassis number and the VIC marker details as stated by the enquirer.

In addition, the following details will be provided: fuel type; SORN status; date of CT; previous numbers; origin and date of manufacture; date of registration, year of manufacture, engine capacity (cc), CO2 emissions, expiry date of the current tax disc and confirmation of colour.

(If you contact DVA outside office hours, you will be given the option to transfer to the Agency's information line where you will be given basic information).

Private vehicle check companies

DVA provides information on the registration of vehicles to certain companies for consumer protection and anti-fraud purposes. Please be assured that no individual name or address details are provided. The information may be added to by companies with details from the police, finance and insurance companies.
