Free schools resources
Travelwise NI has developed a range of free resources for schools which aim to help teachers take part in Travelwise NI Schools’ activities and to bring the advantages of walking to school into the classroom.
Best Foot Forward for Schools
Best Foot Forward for Schools is a Key Stage 2, Council for the Curriculum Examinations and Assessment (CCEA)-approved teaching tool which aims to help pupils learn about how the travel choices we make can affect our lives in a wide range of ways.
This resource can be downloaded using the link below. It is also available as a hard copy with ready-made, photocopiable classroom activities for pupils or as a CD Rom which can be used with an interactive whiteboard. Please contact Travelwise NI to request a copy.
Making the links
The Travelwise NI partner organisation, Sustrans, has created an educational resource tool for the post-primary sector, called Making the Links.
It has been developed to educate and inform young people about sustainable travel issues. It also provides information to help them become more proactive in finding solutions to the transportation problems which affect their school and local community.

School Travel Plan
A School Travel Plan is a written document which outlines a series of practical steps for improving children’s safety on the journey to and from school and reducing the number of car trips made to school by parents, children and staff.
Benefits of a School Travel Plan
It results in benefits for pupils, parents and the wider community, helping to identify healthy and sustainable transport options like walking and cycling and helping reduce the numbers of cars on the road at peak times. In addition, it will contribute to the improvement of the environment around the school.
