Town centre safety and crime prevention

Your local Community Safety Partnership, the police and other partners work with businesses and the community to reduce crime and disorder.

Town centre management

Town centre management brings together a variety of people and organisations aiming to tackle issues such as crime, street layout and furniture, transport problems and quality of the environment. Town centre management teams regularly review an area to make sure any changes are still working for businesses and residents.

They may improve the local area by:

  • installing CCTV systems to reduce street crime such as theft, drug dealing and assault
  • making shopping areas pedestrian only zones
  • landscaping unused waste land
  • improving street lighting

Your local town centre management team may include:

  • residents
  • local businesses
  • police
  • council departments
  • community safety groups
  • neighbouring councils

Community Safety Wardens scheme

The purpose of the Community Safety Wardens scheme is to improve the quality of life in the community by offering greater public reassurance and providing a high visibility patrol service at peak anti-social behaviour times - within a targeted area - to reduce crime, the fear of crime and to detect and deter anti-social behaviour.

Wardens are targeted at locally identified hotspots and peak times for anti-social behaviour and will have a range of council enforcement powers to deal with including:

  • litter
  • fly-tipping
  • street trading
  • fly-posting
  • graffiti

They will work closely with other council departments, local police and the Housing Executive as well as linking in with local anti-social behaviour forums and the Community Safety Partnerships.
