After the MOT/Vehicle Test

When your vehicle passes an MOT test the examiner will issue you with an MOT certificate which will be valid for 12 months from the date of issue. The certificate will come in two parts, either of which can be used when taxing your vehicle.

Do I have to display the certificate on the windscreen?

Yes, the disc must be displayed on the passenger’s side and should be close to the edge of the windscreen, so as not to block the driver’s view of the road. The motorcycle certificate should be displayed on the nearside of the motorcycle in a weatherproof container.

What happens if my vehicle fails an MOT test?

If your vehicle does not pass the MOT test the examiner will give you a record sheet containing details of the faults which will have to be repaired for the retest. You can book a retest at a reduced fee within 21 days of failing the full test otherwise you will have to pay the full fee again.

Can I appeal if I am not happy with the result of my test?

If you disagree with the test result, ask if it is possible to discuss it with the Centre Manager on the day.

If you are still unhappy, you must lodge an appeal within 14 days of the test by completing an appeal form which is obtainable from any MOT Test Centre or by calling DVA Enquiries on the MOT helpline 0845 601 4094. You must include a full test fee with this application.

DVA will then offer an appointment within five working days to re-check your vehicle. Don't have your vehicle repaired before your appeal is considered, as any change to your vehicle may affect the outcome of the appeal.

If your appeal is successful, you may be entitled to a full or partial refund.

How do I make a complaint?

DVA is committed to providing a high standard of service to its customers and wish to ensure that making a complaint is as easy as possible. A written reply will be issued within 10 working days of a complaint having been received, however, if for some reason that is not possible, you will be advised of the reason for the delay;

Your complaints help to identify areas where repeated problems are occurring and take steps to improve the service.

What happens if I lose/damage my MOT certificate?

If you lose, have lost or damaged your MOT certificate, you can apply for a duplicate at any DVA test centre by completing an application form and enclosing the £10 fee. Alternatively you can contact the telephone booking line at 0845 247 2471 or use the internet booking service.

Can I check if a vehicle test certificate was issued by DVA and is legal?

You can contact DVA on 0845 601 4094 and ask that a check be made on the vehicle registration and serial number of the certificate.
