Replacing a lost or stolen registration certificate

You must replace your registration certificate V5C(NI) (formerly known as a log book) if it’s been lost, stolen, damaged or defaced. You can apply by post using a V34(NI) ‘Application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C(NI)’ or you may be able to get a duplicate over the phone using your debit or credit card.

Apply by phone

You can apply by phone on 028 7034 1514 if:

you’re shown as the registered keeper on the registration certificate
your name, address and vehicle details haven’t changed
you have a debit or credit card to pay the £25 fee - the cost of a duplicate registration certificate

Please note that you will be asked to quote the Chassis Number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the vehicle.

Apply by post

You’ll need to:

complete a V34(NI) ‘Application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C(NI)’ available for download, or from any Post Office® branch, or from a Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) local office
enclose the £25 fee
send your completed application to DVA, Coleraine BT51 3TA

If your name, address or both have changed, you can notify the DVA on the V34(NI) form at the same time.

Original registration certificate destroyed by insurance company

The £25 fee isn’t needed if the vehicle has been categorised as 'C' salvage (repairable but repair costs exceeded the vehicle value) by the insurance industry.

However, the £25 fee must be paid if the vehicle has been categorised as A, B or D. (A = scrap only; B = break for spare parts only; D = repairable).

DVA will carry out checks to ensure that the vehicle criteria are met. For further information about the categorisation of vehicles, you’ll need to contact your insurance company.

When to expect your new registration certificate

DVA aims to deliver a registration certificate to you within two weeks if you are already recorded as the registered keeper and within four weeks where there is a change of keeper. Allow at least six weeks for your registration certificate to arrive before contacting the DVA. If, for any reason, DVA is unable to issue a replacement Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C(NI) the fee will be refunded.

If the vehicle requires a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) we will not be able to issue the registration certificate until DVA Testing notify us that it has passed the Identity Check.
