Buyer Beware

Buying a used vehicle is a serious business and, while there's no guarantee that you won't be a victim of vehicle crime, you can reduce the risks. Make sure you know which questions to ask about the seller, the registration certificate V5C(NI) and the identity of the vehicle.

V5C(NI) Registration certificate

The V5C(NI) (often known as the logbook) is changing. A new version is being introduced to reduce the risk of buying stolen vehicles and to make it easier to use. Find out more about the new-style certificate at the page below.

Top vehicle buying tips

You need to be alert to stolen vehicles, forged registration certificates and vehicles with outstanding finance. When buying a used vehicle from a private seller, dealer or auction house, you should make sure you know your rights. Independent advice

You could take an independent, qualified examiner with you to check the vehicle. DVA has made a checklist that you can print and take with you as a reminder of what to look for when buying your vehicle.

If in doubt, trust your instincts. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don't be pressured - there's always another vehicle.
