Hospital Admission - Disability Living Allowance

How hospital admission affects you or your partner if you are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance

Customer

After four weeks:

If the patient is over 16 both the care and mobility components are suspended from the payday following the 28th day in hospital.

After 12 weeks:

If the patient is under 16 both the care and mobility components are suspended from the payday following the 84th day in hospital.

Other Information:

If another person is receiving Carer's Allowance because they are caring for a person with a disability they must also notify the Disability and Carers Service that the disabled person has gone into hospital because payment of the Carer's Allowance will also be affected.

If the disabled person is admitted into hospital for a short period Carer's Allowance will remain in payment for the same period that Disability Living Allowance care component is in payment, as long as hospitalisation of either the carer or the disabled person has not exceeded 12 weeks in the last 26 weeks. Holidays and/or respite care of up to four weeks will affect the 12 week rule.

Payment of Carer's Allowance is suspended from and including the first pay day following admission to hospital of the disabled person if the admission is permanent at the outset.

Partner

Disability Living Allowance is not affected by the partner's admission to hospital.
