Hospital admission - Carer's Allowance

How being admitted to hospital affects you or the person you care for.

Payment of Carer's Allowance

Payment of Carer's Allowance can continue for a period of up to twelve weeks if the Carer's Allowance customer or the person being looked after is admitted to hospital. The period allowed is dependent on any previous breaks in caring in the previous 26 weeks, whether Attendance Allowance / Disability Living Allowance / Constant Attendance Allowance remains in payment and if the break is permanent at the outset.

If either the Carer's Allowance customer or the person being looked after are admitted to hospital Disability and Carers Service should be informed immediately.

Any increase for a dependent adult who has been admitted to hospital will be affected after they have been an in-patient for 52 weeks. Any increases for child dependants will be affected after 12 weeks in hospital. Always contact Disability and Carers Service before accepting benefit.

Carer's Allowance can only be paid when caring for someone who continues to receive Attendance Allowance/Disability Living Allowance/Constant Attendance Allowance.

Payment of Attendance Allowance/Disability Living Allowance/Constant Attendance Allowance will normally stop after four weeks hospital in-patient treatment although the underlying entitlement to the benefit will continue.
