Government and support organisations after a major incident
There are many government and support organisations available to help if you, a relative, or a friend have been involved in a major incident. There are also voluntary organisations that help in specific situations.
Role of Northern Ireland government
In the event of a major incident affecting Northern Ireland, the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) will work with the other NI government departments, the emergency services, local councils and other essential service providers to co-ordinate the government response to the incident and its impact.
If there is a major emergency in Northern Ireland, OFMDFM, in its central co-ordination role, will:
- share information and advice
- facilitate co-ordination across government and the wider public sector where necessary
- maintain NI central crisis management arrangements
More information can be found on the OFMDFM website.
Role of district councils
The relevant local district council may be involved in a response depending on the nature of the emergency. In some instances, the council may set up a dedicated facility such as a Humanitarian Assistance Centre to provide information and assistance for anyone affected by the incident.
If a centre is established it is likely that details will be available on the relevant district council website.
Health and Social Care Trusts
Health and Social Care Trusts provide a range of welfare services to people affected by emergencies.
- Belfast Health and Social Care Trust
- Northern Health and Social Care Trust
- South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust
- Southern Health and Social Care Trust
- Western Health and Social Care Trust
Transport operators and utilities
In the event of a transport emergency, transport operators are likely to contribute to the response to families, survivors and affected communities in the aftermath.
Incident Care Teams (ICTs) may be deployed by Northern Ireland Railways to provide assistance as needed by those affected.
In the event of an incident involving a UK registered aircraft or aircraft carrying UK citizens, the airline operator may activate its own emergency passenger information call centre. In this situation the relevant telephone number will be broadcast in the media and here on nidirect.
Voluntary and other support organisations
There are many organisations that offer you assistance, advice and support in the UK. These include:
- established groups such as the British Red Cross, Salvation Army, Victim Support and Cruse Bereavement Care, provide a range of services
- organisations such as the Samaritans that specialise in emotional support
- Disaster Action - it can provide practical and emotional support as members have each had direct experience of major emergencies
For local support groups, contact the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) or Advice NI.
