Options at the end of year 14
There are a number of options open to you at the end of year 14. These include further education, higher education, training, employment and gap years.
Further Education
Further Education (FE) colleges offer a range of courses. These include academic, vocational or a mixture of both. There are different levels of course available to suit individual ability and learning support for those with learning needs.
Higher Education
Higher Education could boost your career prospects and earning potential, while giving you the chance to study a subject that really interests you - and to get involved in lots of other activities.
Training
Training for Success
Training for Success may be available to those with special circumstances. Contact your local careers adviser to discuss this option further.
Apprenticeships
Want to get skills, be qualified and paid a wage? There are all kinds of apprenticeships that work for all kinds of prople - from Catering and Hospitality to Plumbing, Heating and Ventilation.
Find yourself an employer and you are good to go. Apprenticeship opportunities may be advertised throughout the year at your local Jobs and Benefits office/JobCentre or in the press so keep an eye out.
Employment
You may want to go straight into employment when you leave school in June but remember that skills, experience and qualifications are important in the very competitive labour market that exists. Job vacancies can be found in newspapers or online.
If you are considering employment it is important to start looking during your last term at school. When you turned 16 you should have received your National Insurance Number. Keep this safe as you will need it when you start a job. If you lose this or for some reason do not receive one, contact your nearest Jobs and Benefits office / JobCentre.
Having considered the options it's now time to decide and remember, don't panic. There is always a careers adviser you can talk to who will be able to offer you free, impartial careers information, advice and guidance to get you on your way.
