The Carers and Direct Payments Act (NI 2002)

The Carers and Direct Payments Act (NI 2002) places a requirement on Health and Social Care Trusts to make sure carers know about their right to a carer's assessment, which could help them in their caring role.

What does this mean?

This Act includes a statutory right to a carer's assessment. It also gives Trusts the power to supply services directly to carers in their caring role.

The Act also allows Trusts to make direct payments to:

  • carers (including 16 and 17 year old carers) for the services that meet their own assessed needs
  • people with parental responsibility for children with disabilities
  • people with disabilities with parental responsibility to a child
  • 16 and 17 year old children with disabilities for services that meet their own assessed needs
  • Carers and Direct Payments Act (NI 2002)
