The importance of hand hygiene

Hand hygiene is the single most important method in preventing and controlling infection. Washing your hands will reduce the spread of the swine flu virus.

When do I need to wash my hands?

The hands normally carry a population of germs and should be washed:

  • after visiting the toilet
  • before handling food
  • when the hands are visibly soiled
  • after coughing or sneezing into hands

How to wash your hands

Studies show that people in general use poor hand washing techniques and the most commonly neglected areas are the tips of the fingers, palm of the hand and the thumb.

It is important that hand washing is carried out correctly to prevent the spread of infection.

1. Wet hands with water

2. Apply enough soap to cover all surfaces of hand3. Rub hands palm to palm

4. Right palm over back of left hand with interlaced fingers and vice versa

5. Palm to palm with fingers interlaced6. Back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked

7. Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice versa

8. Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa

9. Rinse hands with water

10. Dry hands thoroughly with a single use towel11. Use towel to turn off tap12. Your hands are now clean
