Apply for Winter Fuel Payments

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment to help older people with their heating bills.

How to use this service

You should qualify for a Winter Fuel Payment if during the qualifying week of 19 to 25 September 2011, you:

  • had reached the qualifying age (born on or before 5 January 1951)
  • normally live in Great Britain or Northern Ireland

If you got a Winter Fuel Payment last winter, you should automatically get one this winter as long as your circumstances have not changed.

You can download and print a claim form for Winter Fuel Payment and send it to the address at the bottom of the form. The form for winter 2011/12 is available here:

Claiming for past winters

To make backdated claims for Winter Fuel Payments for the years 1997-1998 to 1999-2000 you need to use the Winter Fuel Payment claim form for past winters.

You can request this form from the Winter Fuel Payment helpline on 08459 151 515 (0845 601 5613 for textphone users). Lines are open from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, Monday to Friday. Charges are the same as for local calls.

From 2000 to 2001 deadlines for claims were introduced and it is unlikely you will be able to claim for the years 2000/01 to 2008/09.
