New arrangement for students commencing courses in the Republic of Ireland in academic year 2013/2014

There are new arrangements for Northern Ireland students starting study in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) in the 2013/14 academic year.

Starting higher education in ROI in 2013/2014

In the academic year 2013/2014, students from Northern Ireland starting undergraduate courses in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) will be eligible for:

  • a loan to cover the full cost of the student contribution charge of €2,500
  • a means-tested non-repayable grant for living costs of up to £3,475 - the maximum grant will be paid to students where the household income is less than £19,203 and a partial grant will be paid to students where the household income is less than £41,065
  • a loan for living costs - for students living away from home the maximum will be £4,840 and for students living at home the maximum will be £3,750

If you started higher education in ROI before 2013

In the academic year 2013/2014 students from Northern Ireland who commenced higher education in the Republic of Ireland before September 2013 will continue to be eligible for:

  • a non-means tested non-repayable grant to cover the student contribution charge
  • a means-tested non repayable bursary for living costs of up to £2,000 - the maximum bursary will be paid to students where the household income is less than £11,805 and a partial grant will be paid to students where the household income is less than £23,605
  • a loan for living costs - for students living away from home the maximum will be £4,840 and for students living at home the maximum will be £3,750

Students who apply to commence study in academic year 2012/2013 who then defer their entry until 2013/2014 will be assessed under the new 2013/2014 student finance arrangements.

Students will be able to apply for student finance for academic year 2013/2014 early in 2013.
